Txoria Txori, better known as "Hegoak," is a poem in the Basque language written by Joxean Artze. A true ode to freedom and love, the poem was first sung in the late 1960s by Mikel Laboa.
The story behind the song goes that one evening in a restaurant in San Sebastián, Mikel fell in love with this poem, illegally printed on napkins as a form of resistance against the Franco regime, which forbade the use of Basque.
The poem then became a song and is now the anthem of an entire people and their culture.
Translated, the lyrics are sad, yet powerful, and move us deeply:
